Cladding 1 Online

3.5 CPD Credits

The learning outcome of session 1 is to provide an overview of the range of general cladding classifications (broken down into relative weights) which can affect sheathing choices, fastener choices and structural dead load support requirements depending on the cladding type. Further learning outcomes include choice of fasteners with consideration to load transfer, environmental exposure, sheathing/substrate for attachment and the additional considerations where exterior insulation is used, Suitable details to complete flashings, sealant connections, typical details and penetrations, and architectural attachments as identified below. Comparative costing of materials along with time/motion observations from installations will be presented as a tool to help in cost analysis. This, combined with further risk/reward analysis of the various cladding systems and attachments presented in Sessions 2 through 6 in this series will be helpful for Builders & Designers to prepare comparative cost benefit analysis for the impact of changes to above grade wall assemblies as houses move through the requirements of the Step Code from now through 2032 in British Columbia.

INSTALLING LIGHT WEIGHT CLADDING INCLUDING VINYL AND METAL The learning outcome of session 2 is to provide specific variables affecting the over-all goals of specific cladding attachment, flashings details, sealant detailing, insulation systems, airtightness strategies, and structural sub-systems for those cladding attachments described as Light Weight Cladding. Specific typical manufacturers products will be used in exploring installation samples presented through 3D graphics and video/photographic display with open conversations of compatible brand name sealants, membranes and other consumable products used in the installation and costing and relative installation time information shared. This is not meant to be a product endorsement session, but is product specific in its examples in response to requests from the builder community for less generic conversation. Product types and manufacturers and specific highlights of the installation examples are included below. Opinions about relative product performance comparisons will be minimal, with a greater focus on the real costs and requirements for successful installations of each product type and manufacturer. The student is thereafter encouraged to undertake their own cost/benefit analysis in reflection of their own unique business model. VINYL SIDING (KAYCAN) Fasteners, optional furring, continuous exterior insulation, understanding thermal expansion and impact on attachment, starter strips, J trim, specialty pieces (inside corners, outside corners, vent strips), and integrating/transitioning to other cladding/trim.
